Update: Yeovil On The Track

Since Yeovil is my home town now, there’s still a bit more of the history to share.

I’ve dealt with most of the stations, apart from Yeovil Junction, which is still in operation today. I will be going over the history of Junction, as I have some interesting movie footage to share.

Also, it’s mostly been about the station sites themselves, so I’m going to dive a bit more into the locomotives as the stations. I have always been honest, I’m not an expert when it comes to the trains, but I’m always keen to learn. Going over some of the trains at each of the station sites will be good for me.

The A3088 Road

After doing some research, there isn’t much information about the old railway line from Yeovil to the A303. It was a trackbed, but replaced with one of the main roads out of the town.

I’m planning a blog post about the road, but need to get some more footage. I need to take the drone up to look at the bridges in more detail; this means getting permission from Leonardos Helicopters. The drone is restricted this close to the airfield, but I have been able to get permission before.

It would also be to film the drive up and down it. I have the camera to do it, but I can’t say I’m all that keen about strapping the camera to the car and driving down the road. I do have the correct attachments, but it’s still going to be a little worrying.

Sadly, it’s the only good way to get an image from the road of the bridges over the A3088. The closest I can get is from Google Maps.

Martock Station

Next on the line from Yeovil to Taunton, after Monatcute, was Martock. I have done some filming up there before, but I need to get up there again. I’m just waiting on permission to film on the old station site. It shouldn’t be to long and worth the wait in the end.

Event on Wed 28th Aug

Remember there is an event on Wed 26th Aug at the Ninesprings cafe. It’s a free event and I will be there giving a short talk and answering questions about the history of the railway that ran though Yeovil, and Ninesprings.

The event is being put on by Yeovil Country Parks and you can find more detail here.

I’m looking forward to the event, I know there are other contributors will be there, and it’ll be a pleasant evening out. If would like to visit, and come and say Hello, make sure you add it to your calendar.

Still looking for footage

There is movie footage of the branch line, and I’m still on the lookout for it. It has footage of a lot of the stations, and includes footage from Yeovil Junction. If you know anyone who might have some movie film of the line, please ask them to contact me.

For over 40 years I have been working with cine film of all types, and can transfer them to digital. It would be great to find the original footage and preserve it for everyone who loves history.
